[ While the two of them weren't intimately familiar with all of the more modern New Year's Eve traditions, they did spend a good chunk of the morning doing a deep cleaning of their treehouse. They wiped down every surface, mopped, dusted, organized what little they had collected during their few months in Reverin.
Despite it their deep clean naturally involving, well, dirt, Kiyomitsu keeps his complaints to a minimum. In fact, there is an intense energy about him. Even as he wipes down the surface of the kotatsu and their shelves, he's smiling.
Once their treehouse is as clean as can be, they're able to lounge around their treehouse for a couple of hours, but eventually, they'll have to head into town to do some trading to get some ingredients for soba noodles and some side dishes. The whole time, the smile doesn't leave Kiyomitsu's face, even though at this point he's aware he's smiling so much and is trying to hide it.
Yasusada probably expects it, but late evening once the sun has set, Kiyomitsu asks him to help him cook the soba noodles. Neither of them are very good cooks, but if they work together, they can probably come up with something... edible. Hopefully the kitchen doesn't end up as a disaster. It probably will, but Kiyomitsu will volunteer to clean up the mess if it comes to that.
Finally, around 9pm or 10pm, their soba noodles are ready along with some (hopefully) tasty side dishes. They set the table (or rather, the kotatsu), and Kiyomitsu proudly sets a large bottle of sake and some cute sake cups on the kotatsu. As he kneels at the kotatsu, the smile is still present, warm and wide and so full of energy. He's also wearing hair clip Yasusada made him proudly in his hair. ]
We did it~ I think. The broth tasted okay when I taste tested it, but it's the best we can manage without Kasen and Shokudaikiri.
[ Yasusada hadn't said anything out loud about Kiyomitsu's smiling, mostly because he was afraid if he mentioned it, it would make it go away. But he definitely noticed it all day and his smile was infectious because even Yasusada was smiling because of it. They were with each other all day, working on the room, cleaning inside and out of their treehouse and even gathering things to be able to cook.
At first Yasusada didn't realize why, but then it dawned on him, they must be coming onto a new year for them here in this dream land.
Hehe... their first one too, since Yasusada left before it was the new year back home... Maybe that was why Kiyomitsu was so excited since this morning?
He kneels down himself at the kotatsu, wearing his own hair clip as well as he makes himself comfortable. ]
Hehe~ I think Kasen and Shokudaikiri would be rather proud of what we made, even if it wasn't quite up to their skills.
[ Yasusada is right about the date, and also about the reason -- for Kiyomitsu, they've been separated twice for New Year's already. Unbeknownst to him, it would have been three missed New Years' celebrations if he'd been pulled into this world after December. ]
An "A for effort." Isn't that how the phrase goes? Or something like that, anyway.
[ Kiyomitsu takes the sake and carefully fills Yasusada's cup. He can't believe Yasusada is still here. Honestly, he'd expected Yasusada to get up and wander away just to keep the horrible tradition of missing New Year's going. ]
I know there aren't any shrines to visit or anything like that, but we can still watch the first sunrise together.
Do you think we'll be able to see it well from our tree house or will we have to find somewhere better to watch?
[ He looks so excited. He's never got to celebrate the new years with Kiyomitsu either! He was traveling around during the new years, following Okita from afar in the past. ]
I think for the best view, we'll have to head outside. Just so the leaves don't obscure out view. But, I've got a blanket and some snacks packed for then so we'll at least be comfortable.
[ He's radiating so much happiness that there are little bubbles of loose dreamotion floating about. ]
I wasn't completely alone... The people running the stalls were nice and everything. But I guess it still wasn't as much fun experiencing it on my own. I kept thinking "I wonder how Kiyomitsu is bringing in the new year?" and "I hope everyone is having fun."
[ Nope. Not finishing the shocked sound. Not doing it. But it's clear his heart is touched that Yasusada was thinking of him, even during his journey! ]
We might not be able to celebrate with everyone this year, but we have each other. Ah, and the old man, too.
Maybe sometime after we enjoy the sunrise we can go bother the old man and drag him out for a cold morning walk. There might not be any shrines but we can still do something~
[ Yasusada lets out a laugh as goes to grab the bottle of sake and pours a cup for Kiyomitsu as well. After, he goes to take a bite from his soba. A little less full of manners, he slurps the noodles up and lets out a happy sound. ]
We did really good, Kiyomitsu—
[ He paused for a moment and tilted his head. Reaching out to poke at one of the bubbles floating around. ]
That's fair~ It'd be rude not to at least give him the opportunity to spend new year's day with us, but I guess it depends on whether or not he has plans.
[ He lifts the sake cup once it's poured. He doesn't really like the taste of it, but feels weird not to have some sake for celebrations like this. ]
Ah, so you agree--
[ Kiyomitsu's head naturally tilts opposite of Yasusada's. ]
I-I don't think it's me. Or if it is, I'm not doing it on purpose.

Took you long enough, old man!

[That's probably not how it works this time...]
I hope I didn't miss anything fun?

Ah... well we definitely didn't do anything suspicious[ like draw on his face c-cough ] if that's what you mean.

[He probably have the physical stamina for it. But mentally and emotionally? Hm.]
Oh? I hope not. But I trust you two can get yourselves out of trouble. But it almost sounds like you did something.
